Sonia Kovalevsky Day 2019 - Hiba K. Preet S.Bhavjit K.

On Saturday, March 2nd, Preet S. Bhavjit K. and I, Hiba K., whom all go to FFCA High School, attended the University of Calgary’s Women’s Association of Mathematics to broaden our knowledge of Math around the world! We attended a lecture during the middle of the day on Group Theory and the Internet in Terms of Cryptography (a topic taught in second and third year University), and created a tri-fold presentation to showcase our understanding to the University of Calgary’s professors and parents at the event! This was such an extraordinary opportunity and extremely beneficial as we all were eager to witness what it’s like to study math in university and the several options that are open to us. The main goal of this event was to teach the students an aspect of mathematics that isn’t usually taught at school. In an ordinary math class, we are usually taught a specific topic, usually in terms of algebra and numbers, and solve based on certain methods. However, in complete honestly, we did not use many numbers to solve problems during the day. We were introduced to a new perspective of mathematics- the more creative side that encouraged critical thinking and connections to daily life. After attending this day, it is fair to say that the three of us gained a very good understanding of what to expect in a university mathematics class, broadened our knowledge of certain topics that would be taught in university, and finally got to see how math is everywhere around the world. Sonia Kovalevsky day, with no doubt, strengthened our love for mathematics and inspired us to continue with our studies in Mathematics!
